Mapping Internet Censorship with Open Source Software
Description
Internet filtering, censorship of web content, and online surveillance are increasing in scale, scope, and sophistication around the world; from the famous “Great Firewall of China”, the Arab Spring in 2011, and Iran’s “halal” Internet, to politically motivated censorship in Palestine, web filtering by court order in the UK, and restricted access to content on your mobile phone. In this presentation, I will talk about how we are able to map Internet censorship using open source software. I will also present the Open Observatory for Network Interference (OONI), a project created to collect high quality data about Internet censorship and surveillance around the world.
