Open Participatory Cities discussion
Description
Helsinki - open, participatory city?
In recent years, Helsinki has witnessed an outburst of do-it-yourself, collaborative urban events such as the Restaurant Day, the Cleaning Day and neighbourhood block parties. Openness has also been the theme of the World Design Capital Helsinki 2012, and the City has several projects to encourage citizen participation. Urban culture and citizenship are clearly on the move, but what’s next?
This session brings together urban activists and City representatives to discuss cultures of openness and participation in urban space. What have we learnt from self-organisation so far? Are we moving towards a more open, democratic city, and what about activities still not permitted in public space? What types of open spaces, tools and platforms could sustain active citizenship in Helsinki? And how should the interfaces between the City and urban activists be developed?
