Opening INSPIRE Plenary

Morning INSPIRE Plenaries will gather all participants together for an hour before our 13 Topic Streams start their simultaneous sessions. This is a inspiring, reflective moment to get rejuvenated for the day by some of the featured speakers and also to get an (extremely) quick overview to the highlights of the day’s program.

During the Morning INSPIRE Plenaries, there are no other activities in the conference, so the INSPIRE auditorium may be quite crowded - be early, the program starts 10 AM sharp and the capacity for the INSPIRE Auditorium is 300. However, if you don’t make it in, the morning plenaries will also be streamed online and on TVs in the INSPIRE Foyer, so feel free to take the time to lounge and get a coffee while watching!

During the morning plenaries a participation system Screen.io is used. It allows simple audience interaction through web browsers. You need to just go to the session web-address which is screen.io/okfest during morning sessions. For those who are not present in the auditorium or foyer and are following the session remotely through video stream, they can also participate the sessions by opting the version which has embedded video stream.

Keynote Speaker Biographies

MARTIN TISNE

As director of policy at Omidyar Network in London, UK, Martin brings extensive experience advocating for change in government and donor policies and driving sector-level change in the field of government transparency and accountability. Martin leads policy, advocacy strategy, and related investments for the global Government Transparency initiative. Most recently, he was founding director of the Transparency and Accountability Initiative, a collaborative of leading funders committed to strengthening democracy by empowering citizens to hold their governing institutions to account. At Transparency and Accountability Initiative, he also helped found the Open Government Partnership. Previously, Martin founded the aid transparency campaign Publish What You Fund, helped launch Integrity Watch Afghanistan, and was a founding staff member at Tiri. FARIDA VIS

Farida Vis is a Research Fellow in the Social Sciences in the Information School at the University of Sheffield, UK. Her work is centrally concerned with researching social media, crisis communication, visual communication, data journalism and citizen engagement. She led the social media analysis on an academic team that examined 2.6 million riot tweets, analysing the role Twitter played in the 2011 UK riots, as part of The Guardian newspaper’s groundbreaking Reading the Riots project. The data visualisation (by The Guardian Interactive Team) showing the ways in which rumours spread on Twitter during the four days of riots won a Data Journalism Award, for Data Visualisation and Storytelling in a national or international publication. Her forthcoming book, Researching Social Media, is written with computer scientist Mike Thelwall, highlighting the need for such interdisciplinary work in this area and will be out with Sage in early 2013. Topic streams of the day is a fast, entertaining and very informative 10 minute show that no one should miss. Organizers of each topic stream of the day have exactly 1 minute’s time to introduce the expected highlights of their program. This is the time to take the printed program leaflet out and mark the most interesting sessions to participate in during the day.

ANTTI POIKOLA

Antti Poikola, @apoikola, about.me/apoikola

Antti Poikola is part of the OKfestival core organizer team. After the conference he will focus on launching the local chapter of Open Knowledge Foundation to Finland. Beside Open Knowledge actions he is an independent consultant at HILA Open Ltd. and team member of the ePSIplatform. Before becoming a full time entrepreneur Antti worked as a researcher in media technology at Aalto University. He is active and widely connected in eParticipation and Open Data movements in Europe. He specialises in the exploitation of social media, the development of collaborative solutions between citizens and public administration and the establishment of operating models based on openness. He was the main author of the “Public data – an introduction to opening the information resources” - guidebook which was published by the Finnish Ministry of Transport and Communications 2010. Recently he has focused on the cities and he co-authored the “Information navigation in the city” - report for the city of Helsinki as part of the EU funded Fireball project 2012.
