Visualizing Knowledge
Description
Visualizing Knowledge is a seminar on making information visible, organized on Monday, Sep 17th 2012 at Aalto University School of Business’ Main Auditorium (Runeberginkatu 14–16, Helsinki, Finland). A wide variety of speakers with backgrounds in science, art, design and journalism give short talks (20 min., keynotes 40 min.) on data visualization and information design, aimed at non-experts. The seminar is moderated by professor emeritus Tapio Vapaasalo and information designer Juuso Koponen.
The seminar is bilingual, organized so that Finnish language talks are in the morning and English talks in the afternoon, so that non-Finnish speakers can participate on the afternoon’s session.
The event is organized by Informaatiomuotoilu.fi with Aalto Media Factory. It is a satellite event of OKFestival and part of the official World Design Capital Helsinki 2012 programme. The event has been made by possible by contributions from WDC Helsinki 2012 and Grafia, the Finnish association of graphic designers.

Rob Waller (Ph.D.) is an experienced information designer, researcher and educator. He coordinates the Simplification Centre, London – a not-for-profit organisation of volunteer designers and writers who advocate and demonstrate clearer public information.
His work explores the relationship between language and design, and how simplified communications can address the problem of poor functional literacy.
Waller has previously taught typography and graphic communication at the University of Reading, where he did his doctorate on the relation between typography and language. He is also the founder and past editor of the Information Design Journal.

Jer Thorp is an artist and educator with a background in genetics from Vancouver, Canada, currently living in New York.
His award-winning software-based works often use information visualization to treat subjects relating to science, data, art and culture. His works have been exhibited worldwide and have featured in magazines like The Guardian, Scientific American, The New Yorker, and Popular Science.
He is currently Data Artist in Residence at the New York Times, and is an adjunct Professor in New York University’s ITP program.

Moritz Stefaner is a freelance designer of data visualizations and user interfaces, living in Lilienthal, Germany. He has backgrounds in cognitive science and interface design.
He is particularly interested in the aesthetics of information visualization and visualization of complex phenomena, such as those relating to large-scale human activity. His works have been featured in numerous shows like SIGGRAPH and Ars Electronica.
He has co-authored books for publishers like O’Reilly and Springer and lectures frequently on visualization. He was also a member of the jury at this years’ Malofiej news graphics awards.

Professor Heikki Mannila (Ph.D.) is the President of the Academy of Finland. His research at Aalto University’s department of Information and Computer Science focuses on algorithms, data mining and data analysis, particularly relating to the fields of computational biology, paleontology and linguistics. He is the author of numerous papers relating to these subjects.
Mannila will open the seminar with a presentation on the importance of usable and accessible data.

Farida Vis (Ph.D.) is a Research Fellow in the Social Sciences in the Information School at the University of Sheffield. Her work is centrally concerned with researching social media, crisis communication, visual communication, data journalism and citizen engagement.
She is interested in citizen journalism and how people communicate with words and images through social media in relation to global and local crises. Vis led the academic team behind the The Guardians’s award-winning Reading the Riots project examining the UK 2011 riot tweets on Twitter. She is also a co-author on several books relating to data journalism and social media.
Farida Vis’ topic is “What do data visualizations want?”, relating to her current research project.

Yannick Assogba is a Research Developer at IBM Research in Cambridge, MA, working on the design of novel data visualizations and visual interfaces, including the ManyEyes and ManyBills visualization platforms.
His graduate work at MIT Media Arts and Sciences included developing tools for cooperation within physically distributed developer communities, and data visualization to support online identity and social communication.
Assogba has also worked with artistic projects integrating dynamic typography with real time human performance.

Ville Tietäväinen is a cartoonist, illustrator and graphic designer from Helsinki, Finland. His educational background is in architecture.
His extensively researched graphic novel Näkymättömät kädet (Invisible Hands), realistically portraying the life of illegal immigrants in Spain was recently awarded with the national Sarjakuva-Finlandia prize.

Kimmo Vehkalahti (Ph.D.) is an adjunct professor of applied statistics and lecturer at University of Helsinki Department of Social Research. He is also the president of Finnish Statistical Society.
His speciality is statistical computing and visualization, especially in the context of the social sciences. He is not only a profilic scientific publisher but also an educator very popular with his students. Vehkalahti is also a contributor to the open source software Muste.

Paula Ahonen-Rainio (D.Tech.) works as a lecturer at Aalto University’s Department of Real Estate, Planning and Geoinformatics. Her area of expertise is cartography and visualization of geoinformation, that is, modelling and use of spatial data, map design and visual analysis. She is interested in structuring of information, visual overload on map mashups and presentation of spatio-temporal data.

Tuomas Siitonen is an architect and graphic designer based in Helsinki, Finland. He also lectures at the Department of Architecture at Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture and writes about urban spaces on a more theoretical level. At the moment his special interests lie in domestic spaces, place-making and design of temporary spaces and installations.
