Burn Station est une station de téléchargement mobile qui traverse les villes, et qui soutient la distribution gratuite de musique. C’est un logiciel au même titre que ceux du net. A la différence que Burn Station est un événement social qui invite les gens à écouter, à sélectionner et à copier des fichiers audio en Copyleft. Burn Station est un projet open source et non commercial impliquant les nouveaux sens de distribution sur le net, fomenté par Platoniq, un collectif d’artistes et de hackers pan-européen.
Le projet trouve son point de départ dans le développement d’un système de distribution conçu comme un self-service mobile. L’oeuvre est conçue comme une banque de données audio traditionnelle qui rend automatique le processus de sélection, d’écoute et d’enregistrement des fichiers. L’unité de distribution mobile comprend quatre ordinateurs connectés à un serveur local. Le système est géré par trois logiciels qui ont été programmés pour le projet et qui est publié et distribué sous la Licence GNU GPL.
Le dispositif voyage avec l’équipe Platoniq et reste dans les lieux qu’elle a visités. D’autres groupes (labels musicaux sur le net, producteurs, artistes…) dont le travail repose sur des principes similaires sont inviter à participer au voyage de cette discothèque libre.

It is based on the BURN STATION software which was developed by Platoniq and Rama as a 100% Free software. BURN STATION aims to establish links between the media space and the physical space of the city.
BURN STATION is an open source, copyleft model project, an experiment in practical gift economics aiming to reflect on the understandings, sensibilities and entry of `Open Source’ ideas into other social, cultural, and artistic practices. The starting point is the development of a system of distribution as a mobile self-service. This system has been running and evolving throughout the first 2 on-going years of Burn station actions by Platoniq. It is designed as a local data base for audio that automatizes the process of selection, listening and recording of files. The mobile distribution unit consists of 4 computers connected to a local server.
